Ingredients and spices for making Japanese siomai:
- 500 g minced chicken (you can use pork or beef)
- 2 small carrots - chopped
- 1 teaspoon of ground pepper
- 2 teaspoons of sesame oil
- 2 teaspoons of oyster sauce
- 1 egg
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1 teaspoon of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of flour
- 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
- 5-6 crab sticks (surimi)
- 1 pack of nori
Instructions for cooking Japanese siomai
- Mix all but the last two ingredients in a bowl. Blend until well blended. Cover and leave to rest for at least 30 minutes.
- Place the nori wrapper on a flat surface. Distribute the meat filling evenly. See photo below.
- Place the chopsticks / surimi in the center of the meat lengthwise.
- Wrap it like sushi. Cut each roll.
- You can also wrap it like regular dumplings. Just cut the nori sheet into squares.
- Steam for 30-45 minutes or until the meat is cooked through.
- Meanwhile, prepare the sauce (soy sauce, lemon juice and chilli). In a small skillet over medium heat, add oil and garlic. Saute the garlic, stirring often, until golden and crisp. As a side dish you can sprinkle with fried garlic and add it to the sauce. Have a good time!
